“Internationalization of trade and information flows, market liberalization and new technological
opportunities are urging many transportation and logistics companies to take action”
(Arthur Andersen, 2000). Customer’s requirements expressed whether in terms of reliability,
transparence, flow, payments, and international connectivity have put some tremendous pressure
on logistics companies (xx). In this context, the race to most sophisticated information
technology (IT) applications appears to lots of companies to be the key to success (or at least
to survival). This is reflected in the massive investment in IT for logistics activities (for example,
Stephens Inc. (2000) estimates it to reach 1 trillion $ worldwide only for cross-border
logistics by the year 2005.
