, in which the birds were prevented from visiting any
room for 4 h in the middle of day (Falk, Biebach, & Krebs, 1992). In
both tests, the insectivorous birds shifted their visits to the
appropriate locations consistent with the time manipulation while
the granivorous species did not (Falk et al., 1992). Falk et al. suggested
that the species differences could be explained by the degree
to which time information is useful for these two species: whereas
the insectivorous species feeds from a resource that is limited to a
specific time of day, the granivorous species feeds from a resource
that is available throughout the day and therefore the time information
is less relevant for it.
