There are several ways of planning lessons to develop this skill. At first, say for pupils in their sixth year of English or even earlier, the teacher can merely give out a question, saying: " who can find the answer on page 30 ?" He could continue this through a short lesson, or ask questions in this way several times during other reading lessons. The first questions must require the finding of one fact only, and with a slow class this should be the rule for some time; but when the pupils discover what the procedure is, and enjoy the keen search to find answers quickly, then they may be asked questions that demand first a few, and then many details; and later, the putting together of details from several paragraphs, and then from several pages. Thus it is very easy to increase the difficulty of the tasks gradually.
