Today, we live in a world where connected devices outnumber humanity, and as we usher in the age of the Internet of Things (IoT) where every device - and increasingly every thing – is connected, we find that the gadgets around us are constantly collecting, transmitting, andanalysing data. While IoT and Big Data analysis could lead to greater empowerment of individuals and allow businessesthe opportunity to improve their services and interactions with consumers, the same opportunity can challenge the very concept of consumer privacy.
Does the era of IoTand Big Data necessarily have to mean erosion of individuals’ability to manage privacy? How can we balance the growing data opportunities with the potential risks and harms for individuals? Between the imperative to innovate and unlock value from data and to protect personal privacy, how can we achieve a policy approach that is accepted by all parties? More fundamentally, how do we frame the debates and look at the issues around IoT and privacy against the changing landscape?
This Roundtable is a joint initiative among the Internet Society (ISOC), TRPC and the International Institute of Communications (IIC) to bring a diverse group of stakeholders together and initiate a constructive dialogue on this emerging trend. The Roundtable will review the opportunities and risks ofIoT and Big Data for businesses and consumers, share policy trends in Europe and Asia and discuss what best practices there may be to strike a balance between innovation and privacy.
