Additional research is needed on the construction of exams to measure specific domains set
forth in career and technical education (CTE) programs. As previously noted, criterionreferenced
exams are more useful in determining if a student has mastered a certain domain of
instruction. However, the hands-on nature of CTE programs is difficult to measure in a multiplechoice
exam. Many states are beginning to develop ways to assess CTE programs. There is a
need for research to investigate theoretical models of test design and test validation. In the case
of this study, investigation of test construction was conducted outside of agricultural science
education, and then further outside of CTE, because there has been no research conducted in test
construction for such programs. While guidance was provided from academic courses, which
use examinations as a way to assess programs, academic programs typically are not as hands-on
in instruction and do not associate well with the nature of CTE.
