The simplest RFID system is a product identification tool that
uses a wireless microchip and an antenna in the tag that does
not need physical contact or sight positioning (like barcodes) with
the reader. The reading phase is very fast and fully automated. It is,
thus, a very promising technology for the food sector, because it
improves management of perishable foods, as well as tracking
and tracing of food quality and safety problems. The main problems
related to these technical systems are the tag cost and a lack
of standardization, although, prices are going down continuously
and efforts for defining standards of operation are being made.
