Food treatments included: trash fish (control) and an animal protein–based diet (APD).
Each treatment was replicated in triplicate and was randomly assigned to experimental
aquaria. The practical formulated diet was prepared using ingredients described in
Table 1. Fish meal, wheat flour, and tuna oil were used as protein, carbohydrate, and lipid
source, respectively. Mineral and vitamin mixes were added to the diets. Wheat gluten
was used as a binder. The diets were prepared by weighing the dry ingredients and
mixing them thoroughly in a mixer. Lipid was added dropwise, and the mixture was
further blended to ensure homogeneity. Approximately 200 ml of hot water was then
added for each kilogram of this mixture. The formulated diets were extruded and dried
using an electric fan at room temperature for 48 h. When feeding, the formulated diet was
broken down into small pieces (round shape of 1.5-cm diameter) to facilitate sucking by
the snails. All experimental diets were stored in plastic bags at -20C until used.
Duplicate samples of diets were analyzed for proximate compositions according to
standard methods (AOAC 1990).
