after yhe buddha related the Vessantara Jatake to his relatives, they went back to their palace. No one in vited the Buddha to eat breakfast, because they all assumed that he would be eating at the palace. The naxt morning, the Buddha knew from his super-human knowledge (nana) that the previous Buddhas, when they visited the cities of their fathers, went around collecting alms from the people to give them an opportunity to make merit (generosity, or dana). yjebuddha continued the tradition by going out with his alms bowl and leading his followers along the roads. this was the first time that the people of Kapilavastu had seen the Buddha performing pindapata, or alms rounds.
