Collected from our hotel, which was located outside of Ubud, at 2.30 am by minibus. Upon arrival at the base introduced to two Guides (walkers have to be accompanied by Guides for this trek), their English was very good and they were very enthusiastic to tell you all sorts of information along the route (but only if that is your wish). The air was chilly so useful to wear layers and long shorts or trousers (jackets can be hired for a small fee from an enterprising man at the edge of the parking area). Making our way by torchlight through fields planted with tomatoes, cabbage etc. you then gradually make your way up Mount Batur, surrounded by darkness. Stops along the route allow for water and a snack. The Guides readily help those who need a hand up the steeper parts (not suitable for those who have difficulty walking on uneven surfaces uphill or for very young children).
Arriving in darkness, we enjoyed breakfast which included hard boiled eggs that had been cooked in the volcano's steam ! There was quite a breeze while sitting eating and pleased to have a jumper on. Gradually the clouds cleared, the beautiful rays of the sun started to appear and light up the spectacular views of the lake and beyond. The route down was just as enjoyable, a little steep in places. Towards the end of the walk you can always hitch a lift on the back of a motorbike if your legs are just a little too tired.
Minibus returns you to your hotel, stopping along the way at a nursery which grows all sorts of interesting trees, tropical bushes, herbs etc. and you have the opportunity to taste a large selection of coffee / herbal teas.
Excellent value as all food / drink is included and Guides knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely worthwhile trip while in Bali. (Easier to pay in local currency rather than US Dollars). Arrived back at hotel at 10.30 am so still have the remainder of the day to enjoy.
