ALLERGENS IN BERRIES: AN ISSUE FOR
RISK ASSESSMENT
Reports on allergenicity of berries such as the strawberry,
raspberry, blackberry, and blueberry are still rare.
Whether this is related to a general low allergenicity, the
small amounts consumed, or the restricted timeframe of
consumption still remains to be answered. Low exposure
to certain allergens might be the reason for the limited
problems recorded so far. However, with ongoing
encouragement of berry consumption this situation
might change. Berries are not only consumed fresh but
are also eaten as common ingredients in different food
products, either as the main or an added component
