Best Management Practice Approach to Planning
The BMP approach to conservation planning is to select erosion-control practices from a list of approved best management practices that are judget to provide satisfactory erosion and sediment control. The BMPs are chosen without full consideration of the resulting erosion and sediment-delivery rates and sometimes without tailoring the practices to sitespecific condition. The BMP conservation planning approach is favored in many regulatory programs because it is easy to administer and enforce (U.E. Environmental Protection Agency,2000).Regulatory compliance requires only that the practices have been selected from an approved list and that the practices have been installed and maintained according to specification. The BMP approach provides a relative degree of protection such as a 75% reduction in soil loss rather than the reduction of soil loss to a specific quantitative standard.
