November 1998, interviews were conducted with 404 baby boomers residing in
Australia’s three major cities: Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Trained inter
viewers
from a commercial research firm specializing in sampling techniques and
fieldwork conducted the in-home personal interviews. Respondents selected to be
part of the study were identified using probability cluster sampling. The federal
electorate system was used as the primary sampling unit. Within an electorate, a
starting address is chosen at random. From the starting address, interviewers fol
low
set rules for the selection of addresses to interview and the selection of
respondents within a household. To ensure that the sample contained only baby
