Flexible kanban System (FKS), widely discussed in the
literature, was developed by Gupta and Al-Turki (1997). This
adapted system uses an algorithm to manipulate dynamically and
systematically the number of signals in order to offset the
blocking and starvation caused by uncertainty (mainly related
to demand and processing time) during a production cycle.
Flexibly manipulate and change the number of signals in this
adaptation is a decisive factor for successful production systems
that faces competitive environments with unstable demand and
variability in processing times. Gupta and Al-Turki (1997, 1998),
Perry and Gupta (1999), and Moore and Gupta (1999) provide
more details about this system.
