An 18.3% sample was achieved, closely approximating the targeted
20% representative quota sample sought. Of the 513 HCWs who
responded to the survey at the three hospitals, the majority were female
(86.0%) and 59.1% were 40 years of age or older. Three quarters were
nurses (75.4%), including nursing services managers, professional
nurses, staff nurses and nursing assistants; 14.4% were allied health
professionals, including social workers, physiotherapists, radiographers
and dietitians; and 10.1% were doctors, including registrars and
specialists. Respondents had worked an average of 12.6 years at the
respective hospitals. The sample was a good reflection of the workforce
as a whole, and did not differ significantly with regard to the race and sex
of the hospital workforce population.
