During the process of gasification of PL, the volume is reduced
by approximately 60–70%, no P is lost and the risk of botulism
and other pathogens are eradicated due to the high temperatures.
On the basis of a 60% reduction in volume, biochar has approximate
17.5 kg P/tonne compared to 7.0 kg P/tonne in PL. As a result
PL biochar is a dry stable product, with the potential to be a high
value fertiliser, available for application to grassland and arable
land in Northern Ireland and for export to the UK and/or Republic
of Ireland.
