The upholsteryprogramwas managed and taught by Nick, a teacher of 13 years. Prior to starting the program Nick owned an upholstery business. After visiting a vocational program run by one of his friends, Nick acquired teaching qualifications in a program designed to attract people with industry experience. Nick structured the WBE upholstery programas if the classroom and workshop in the school were a workplace. He assigned students to work on projects brought into the shop by members of the community, including furniture, boats, and automobiles. The students dealt with clients, ordered materials, constructed a plan for each project, and completed the upholstery; they completed some tasks independently and some in teams with a senior student leading a groupof entry-levelstudents.
