. General discussion
Through two experiments, the current study provides empirical evidence regarding the utility of SNSs, like Facebook, for disseminating information regarding breastfeeding among young female adults. Experiment 1 examined the effects of message styles (testimonial versus informational versus mixed) and quantitative indicators of online page popularity (high versus low) on key dependent measures. Results indicated that online popularity (quantified by the number of “likes,” “talking about this,” shares, etc.) of a pro-breastfeeding community Facebook page has a significant effect on source credibility, future breastfeeding intention, and wishful identification with pro-breastfeeding role models. This finding supports prior research that have found higher numbers of “likes” and followers on social media profiles exerting a positive effect on viewers’ perceptions of social media profile owners (e.g., Jin and Phua, 2014 and Tong et al., 2008) Additionally, message style exerted a significant effect on perceived source credibility and information value, with informational messages from experts rated higher than testimonial messages from mothers and mixed messages, indicating that SNSs users may prefer reading health information from experts, rather than other members’ health experiences, which are more highly valued in online social support groups (e.g., Greene et al., 2010, Moreno et al., 2009 and Scanfeld et al., 2010). The significant two-way interaction between online page popularity and message styles also found that highly popular Facebook pages with testimonial messages or mixed messages were seen as being more persuasive. This finding suggests that SNS users do not trust other members’ testimonial messages as much as expert information, unless the page has a high number of “likes” and other quantitative indicators of popularity attesting to its credibility. Similarly, Facebook pages with mixed comments needed to have high page popularity in order to result in higher wishful identification with pro-breastfeeding models and behavioral intention to show online social support. As such, it can be interpreted that SNS users look to quantitative indicators of popularity that help them to decide whether social media profile owners are attractive role models by which to model a particular behavior (e.g., Tong et al., 2008 and Utz, 2010). These findings suggest that on SNSs like Facebook, users prefer health information that is from credible, expert sources, and will evaluate testimonial messages from other members in a more positive way if the SNS page where the messages appear is sociometrically popular. As such, online page popularity acts as an indicator of credibility for UGC.
Experiment 2, meanwhile, assessed the effects of message valences (success versus failure versus mixed stories about one’s own breastfeeding experiences) and online page popularity (high versus low) on perceived source credibility, wishful identification, social identification, interpersonal attraction, willingness to build online friendship, behavioral beliefs toward breastfeeding, empathy, and role model perception. Success stories elicited the highest perceived source credibility, wishful identification, social identification, interpersonal attraction, willingness to build online friendship, behavioral beliefs toward breastfeeding, and role model perception, while failure stories elicited the greatest empathy. As such, SNS users are more likely to identify with and see successful pro-breastfeeding mothers as credible role models; as a result, they develop more positive behavioral beliefs toward breastfeeding, consistent with prior research (e.g., Bandura, 1986 and Higgins et al., 1985) whereby people learn health behaviors from social roles models they identify with. Additionally, high online page popularity also resulted in significantly higher breastfeeding intention, altruism, attitude toward breastfeeding, and breastfeeding self-efficacy, suggesting that members of SNS health groups used quantitative indicators of popularity to judge a SNS health page’s credibility, and had more positive health behavioral outcomes with regards to breastfeeding when the corresponding SNS health page is more sociometrically popular. Consistent with previous research examining user interaction with online communities (e.g., Bishop, 2007 and Nonnecke et al., 2006), readily available information and cues on SNS pages were used to evaluate these pages. This study provides empirical evidence that SNS users can derive positive health benefits from interaction with popular SNS pages.
The current study addressed the potential of SNSs as a venue for exchange of pro-breastfeeding messages from multiple perspectives and an arena for demonstration of online social support. Results show that SNSs can play an important role for the dissemination of pertinent health information and social support messages for health issues like breastfeeding
