You can hear more than 176 languages spoken among children in the New York City public school. The system supports more than one million students. English is not the first language about 160,000 children in the city. This is partly why New York’s Department of Education provides dual – language programs. Students are taught in two languages, English and another one, like Russian or Chinese. Math, social studies, science and all regular courses are taught in languages. And the students learn about the cultures connected to the
Non – English languages. Milady Baez is Deputy Chancellor of English Language Learn and Student Support. She says these dual – language programs will help Children succeed in the future. She says the jobs of the future will require the knowledge of more than one language. And knowing more than one language will open doors for them, she says. Dual – language program are popular But some groups in the United States oppose them. Say the English language should come first. The group, U.S. English wants to make English the official language of the united States. Right now, the U.S. dose not have an official language. Todd DuBois is with U.S. English. He says he has no problem with students speaking their native language at home. But, he says, schools should put English first. He says studies show that children who learn English early will be more successful later. And. He says, focusing on English in the classroom will help the students learn the language faster.
