Results indicating that the fractions V and F represent the main
components of OFMSW, are in agreement with data published by
Riber et al. (2009) and by Hanc et al. (2011) from analysis of waste
composition at household level. Results obtained for the fractions
BP and MFC partially agree with data published by Smith et al.
(2014) on analysis of food waste composition in the Borough of
Eastleigh, Hampshire, England. The Authors reported that the categories
‘‘Bread’’ and ‘‘Pasta/rice/noodles’’ were present in a percentage
ranging from 15% to 20% (on wet weight) while the
percentages of ‘‘Meat’’ and ‘‘Cheese’’ were lower than 4%. These
data partially confirm the results of this study, indicating that on
wet weight basis, BP and MFC fractions represent no more than
20% of OFMSW. Finally to the best of the Authors’ knowledge, no
data are available on the presence of the fractions U, thus a comparison
with other studies is not possible, although U is present
in OFMSW at relevant percentages
