Since many existing school buildings (about 70% in Italy) were built after the First World War without complying
with any specific European and national standards of energy efficiency, they consume a lot of energy. Moreover, there
is not often an adequate energy and maintenance management based on an integrated audit that allows to carry out
coordinated actions of energy saving. In fact, retrofitting works should be aimed not only to improve energyperformance and to increase users’ comfort but they should be considered as an opportunity to make visible the audit
results and to raise school community’s awareness about energy saving issues.
Therefore, we used the school building as a teaching tool towards a more sustainable society
