Assessing the factors, or the determinants, correlates and
barriers that influence treatment compliance provides a
structure upon which to base interventions geared to support
patients in their attempt to comply with therapy. Based on
the recently published report on adherence from the WHO
that identifies five interacting dimensions that affect
compliance, we have developed a Model (see Fig. 1) to
illustrate the multidimensional factors that need to be
considered in predicting treatment compliance. The five
dimensions are: (1) socio-economic factors; (2) health-care
setting and system-related factors; (3) condition-related
factors; (4) treatment-related factors; (5) and patient-related
factors [15]. Studies examining compliance in the HF
population demonstrate the intertwining of these factors,
however, they also strongly emphasize the roles of the
provider and patient.
