In 2008, Uruguay’s government approved a 25-year energy policy aimed at increasing the country’s reliance on renewable resources. Today, renewable energy powers 95 percent of electricity in Uruguay. The country currently relies on a mixture of wind turbines, solar power, hydropower and biomass. Ramón Méndez, Uruguay’s head of climate change policy, attributes the country’s success to the fact that investors have discovered clean energy makes good business sense.
