The rest of this paper is organized as follows. In Section II,
a complexity/performance comparison of the switch-antenna
array and multiple-channel antenna array FMCW radar systems
is presented. An experimental prototype of the 24-GHz
switch-antenna array radar system is described in Section III.
Details of the transmitter, receiver, antennas, and switch are
given. In Section IV, the beamforming algorithms used for the
performance evaluation of the developed system are introduced.
In Section V, experimental results and discussions regarding
beamforming results and robustness performance are given,
along with the description of the setup of the radar test bed and
the experimental environment.
II. SWITCH-ANTENNA ARRAY VERSUS
MULTIPLE-CHANNEL ANTENNA ARRAY
In this section, we discuss the complexity/performance of
the switch-antenna array and multiple-channel antenna array
FMCW radar systems.
Let us first discuss the resolution of an FMCW radar array
system. The angular resolution of a radar with a uniform linear
array (ULA) is significantly related to the number of receiving
