A fundamental consideration of this study is whether bibliographic
enhancements assist end-users who are unsure of which books will be most useful
for their information need. As a way of examining such a population of end-users,
the experimental design consisted of a subject population of lower-division
undergraduates at the University of Pittsburgh. It was expected that because these
subjects represented a population o f relatively inexperienced end-users, the
addition o f bibliographic enhancements would be the most beneficial to this
population. It was also reasonable to suppose that these subjects, lower-division
undergraduates, would be likely to use OPACs for subject searching in their
attempts to locate useful books for term papers.
