Broaching machines are available in vertical and horizontal forms of construction. Horizontal
machines require a large floor space, since such machines are, according to the position of the
drive, two to three times as long as the broach. Being very high, vertical machines require to be
positioned in a pit below the workshop floor, or to be provided with a gantry. Machines with
lifting tables are of appreciably smaller proportions, the work here being traversed past the
stationary cutting tool during the cutting stroke. Internal or external broaching machines are
used according to the requirement of the work. Figures 7.11 and 7.12 illustrate a horizontal
internal broaching machine and a vertical external broaching machine, respectively.
