As introduced in Chapter I, the purpose of this study was to explore the practice
of self-leadership in different Asian cultures within the work environments of the
globalized multinational service industry. The review of literature is made up of three
sections. The first is a review of scholarship on management and self-leadership theory.
The second section is a review of cross-cultural theory, the lenses through which cross cultural
scholars examine the context of different leadership practices. The third section
explores the globalized workplace, the emergence of a multinational world, and the
workplace of the 21st century. A discussion of globalization and the movement toward a
global leadership contingency model provided the context for the study of self-leadership.
