There is a distinct tradeoff between the level of granularity of the classification system used
and the time and value of the information that can be generated as a result. The larger the
number of potential classes that exist, the more difficult it will be for individuals to decide
which classification is correct and the more likely it is that occasional errors will be made.
Alternatively, more classifications yield a better understanding of what the potential impact of
defects would be. It will also yield more information about the quality of the processes used to
develop the product. Generally speaking, keeping the classification system simple (2-5
categories) is the best place to begin the process. Expansion of ther system can then be based
upon the needs of the organization.
