A pesticide is a chemical or mixture of chemical used to destroy prevent or control any living thing considered to be a pest including insects (insecticides) fungi (fungicides) rodents or plants. The definition of a pesticide from the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) is “a chemical or mixture of chemicals or substances used to repel or combat an animal or plant pest. This includes insects and other invertebrate organisms; all vertebrate pests. e.g. rodents fish pest birds snakes gophers all plant pests growing where not wanted, e.g. weeds and all microorganisms which may or may not produce disease in humans. Household germicides plant-growth regulators and plant-root destroyers are also included” (Photo 8.3).
