Conveniently located in the city of Chiang Mai,
Chiang Mai International School (CMIS) provides high quality education in an ideal social and cultural environment. CMIS has been helping meet the educational needs of the international community in northern Thailand since 1954.
We offer an English-language, American-sourced education taught from an international perspective. Our well qualified teachers provide instruction that is aligned to a standards-based curriculum focused on learning. The academically rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered in our high school help prepare our graduates for admission to outstanding universities and colleges around the world.
Built on a tradition of providing educational excellence in a caring community, today we remain the school of choice for students from 35 different countries. While remaining true to our core values of the Christian faith, we welcome students from all faiths, cultures, nationalities, and backgrounds from the expanding international community in northern Thailand.
CMIS is licensed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, owned by the Foundation of the Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT), and operated through an appointed nine-member administrative advisory board. The day-to-day activities of the school are run by a Thai school manager, a Thai director, a foreign superintendent, and two principals (elementary and secondary).
CMIS celebrates the richness and variety of an international community in a Thai setting. The School encourages students, parents and staff to appreciate the culture and people of Thailand, and to enjoy strong international relationships throughout life.
CMIS teaches and models the Christian worldview, demonstrates the love of God in community life, and encourages the development of good character.
At CMIS, students can make their own informed response to what is taught in an environment where opinions, differences and other worldviews are discussed with mutual respect.
CMIS is a caring community, which nurtures a sense of belonging and mutual responsibility for the well-being, safety, and healthy lifestyles of staff, students and their families.

CMIS strives to maintain a balanced, harmonious international environment where English is the language of inclusion. We welcome applications from international students who:
(1) qualify academically (as determined by school records and standardized entrance assessment results) and
(2) meet the required English language proficiency expectations for their grade level (as determined by CMIS Guidelines).
We accept a limited number of academically qualified non-native English speakers, provided their English language proficiency falls within CMIS guidelines for English as a Second Language (ESL) Support and there is space available.
We also have limited availability for students with mild to moderate learning disabilities (as determined by previous school records, standardized testing, and Individualized Educational Plans), provided their disability falls within the CMIS guidelines for Learning Support (LS) and there is space available.
A variety of sports at various levels of competition is offered to students in all grades. Our desire is for students to have an opportunity to sample many different competitive and recreational sports, and to be encouraged to develop their own specific athletic talents for a lifetime of fitness activities. We are a founding member of the Chiang Mai Athletic Conference (CMAC) and have endeavored to organize our sporting year to coincide with the schedules of other international schools, as well as to meet the range of needs and interests of our students
The other CMAC schools are: • American Pacific International School (APIS) • Chiang Mai German Christian School (CDSC) • Grace International School (GIS) • Lanna International School of Thailand (LIST) • Nakorn-Payap International School (NIS) • Prem Tinsulanonda Center for International Learning (Prem).
Our program for most sports consists of scheduled games and tournaments with the schools of CMAC, but there are also certain sports for which games and tournaments are scheduled with non-CMAC member schools.
Elementary life
CMIS Elementary School is filled with a variety of fun and interesting activities. Students have the opportunity to participate in after school sports for their age groups. There are various seasons for the sports. These are after school activities.
Every year in elementary we offer six weeks of "Friday Clubs" to our students which take place during the last period of the day on Fridays. The students get to choose which club they want to participate in, and so each club has a wonderful cross-section of age levels. We have offered the following clubs for students in KG to grade 6:
Lego & Knex
Fairy Tales & Crafts
Puzzles
Knitting
Chess
Dance
Techie Kids (computer class)
Mandala Designs
Drama
Storybook Stew
Futsal
Flag Football
Batik
Card & Dice games
Drawing
Scrap-booking
Board Games
Teachers and parents led the groups and the students had an amazing time exploring their favorite hobbies or participating in sports and artistic pursuits. Some loved the fact that they could try something new and different, like Batik or Mandala Designs. It was a fun-filled, cross-grade level, interactive learning time that we intend to repeat year after year!
During the school year, Elementary students get to take part in many special events. The PTG ( Parent-Teacher Group) co-sponsors many events with the school throughout the year. There is the Orientation for new Students, Back-To-School Barbecue, Open House, Fall Festival, Christmas Event, Book Week, Book Swap and Pizza Sale, Teacher Appreciation Day, Thai Day/International Day (on a yearly rotation), Volunteer Appreciation Tea, and monthly Virtue Assemblies, to name a few. Each grade is responsible for the assembly that focuses on the virtue of the month. There are also special Music and Art showcases throughout the year.
Grade levels have various special days and events throughout the year that reinforce and highlight curriculum. Some of these events are: Medieval Day, Explorer's Day, Teddy Bear Day, Author Day, 100 day celebrations, and City Simulations to name but a few. From this partial list you can feel what a fun and active place Elementary School is.
Elementary School children have a busy and enjoyable mixture of academic, field trips, class activities, and sports. Elementary parents generously volunteer their time and talents to further enhance learning and fun. We really appreciate them.
Secondary School
Secondary School at CMIS offers many extracurricular activities that cover all areas of our community. We offer a vibrant athletics program and are a founding member of the Chiang Mai Atheletic Conference. This conference is made up of the international schools in Chiang Mai and arranges athletic events for local, national, and international levels. CMIS has also hosted the Boy Scouts of America Troop 731 Far Eastern Council, the only BSA troop in the North of Thailand, for over 30 years.
