Every child with an incurable BT has a personal
story that is rich in values, culture, and spirituality.
An interdisciplinary family-centered and culturally
sensitive palliative care approach is vital
to comprehensively assess and manage the depth
and breadth of needs of this vulnerable population.
Incorporating palliative care early in the
child’s trajectory optimizes symptom management,
reduces suffering, and sustains hope and
connectedness despite the possibility of death
[ 2 ]. Certain brain tumors in particular carry a particularly
dismal prognosis from the time of diagnosis
(e.g., DIPG) and a palliative/supportive
care approach may be the only preferred treatment
option selected by families.
