Supply chains are being redesigned to respond to varying customer and product
service-level requirements. Value chains reflect the specific economic processes of
the North American and European markets. The question is where value-added
functions should be carried out and the form they should take. Again, distinct
freight distribution strategies mark particular regionalism. When it comes to the
inbound logistics of overseas goods, a general distribution structure does not exist.
Differences in the economic geography of North America and Europe have led to
specific characteristics in inland distribution networks, as depicted on Fig. 10.9.
