The RDC/TMD offers a battery of reliable and valid measures that have gained wide acceptance and use. Psychological domains worthy of assessment but not incorporated into the RDC/TMD include anxiety, substance abuse, and sleep disturbance. Additional domains relevant to a comprehensive assessment of the TMD patient include physical or sexual abuse, PTSD, and other related quality of life measures. For this last group, there is not yet sufficient evidence to confirm their utility as
universal assessment screening measures, but there is evidence of their relevance in many patients with chronic
TMD pain.
