DESIGN OF A HAPTIC STEERING INTERFACE
Where most studies with haptic driving assistance have evaluated
the ability of haptic feedback to reduce the driver’s
cognitive load -when provided in conjunction with visual
feedback- we are specifically interested in performing a steering
task using haptic feedback alone. In existing systems,
haptic cues only indicate when to steer and in which direction,
but not by how much as the driver typically determines
that using visual feedback, e.g., by looking at the curvature of
the road. In particular contexts, for example, when the driver
is temporarily blinded by glare or their view is limited by fog,
knowing how much to steer is essential information for keeping
the car in the lane.
