Division I football players in this study were on average similar in height but heavier in total body mass than players of a similar competitive playing level in the early 1980s. This finding is similar to that of Olson and Hunter (14), who compared the 1973–1974 and 1983–1984 height/weight patterns in players of this same playing division, as well as to those reported by Oppliger et al. (15) comparing Division I-A players and Snow et al. (22) in a study comparing the body composition of professional football players over the past 20 years. The current data, in conjunction with the similarly reported trends across multiple playing levels over the past 20 years, supports the contention of a continuing emphasis on increasing body size among players in this sport.
