Once there is a general understanding of the different cultural values, five business etiquettes must also be mastered to prevent any unintentional offenses. First business etiquette is to wear appropriate clothing. Unless specifically notified, it is best to wear an internationally accepted business attire to the meeting. Standard suit and tie for men and either a suit, tailored dress or skirt, blouse with a jacket are acceptable for women (unausa.org). Women should take extra precaution not to wear anything that may be considered provocative, especially when dealing with conservative countries such as in the Middle East. Modesty can go a long way. Making sure the blouse is not see-through, the skirt or dress is not too short or the heels are not too high can make a difference of respect and offense. The color, patterns and fabrics should also be conservative and the clothing must be wrinkle-free. Dark colors such as black, grey and navy are appropriate. Extreme and bright colors, as well as lacy or see-through fabrics can be distracting for business meetings. Jewelry and watches should be conservative and nondistractive.Perfume and cologne should not be overpowering or not worn at all. Hair should be kept neat and conservative and makeup should be kept at a minimal with a natural look.
