As I’ve gotten to know our business

As I’ve gotten to know our business and meet with many of you since February, I’ve got the impression that we have lots and lots of rules and procedures. I suspect that as a result we are doing some smart things but we’re also probably doing some pretty dumb things.

If this is the case, then we need to do something about it. While rules are necessary, they can get out of control. Excessive rules or convoluted procedures can stop us all from doing our jobs properly and gets in the way of looking after our clients, looking after our people, collaborating effectively and being innovative.

If we remove the rules that don’t make sense, we can take a step closer to creating the Aurecon we all aspire to.

So I’m asking for your help to find the dumb things we do – to identify those rules, procedures, activities, approvals, forms and so on that you think are dumb and are slowing you down in doing your job each day. Our goal is to fix or change at least 100 things within 100 days as a result of the campaign. We cannot achieve that without your help. Brendan Gibbs has volunteered to chair a group committed to achieving this goal.

But so as not to waste time, we are only opening this for five days. If you don't have your submission in by sunset on Friday (South Africa time) then it will be too late. As the saying goes – speak now or forever hold your peace.

With your help we’ll find a bunch of things we can quickly change to make life simpler and easier – to improve our productivity and our efficiency and take some pain out of our day.

What I’d like you to do is this:

- Send an email to the address below for every dumb thing we do (and send as many individual emails as you like) PLEASE DO NOT COPY ME IN
- In the subject line for each email describe what it relates to, e.g. training, finance, the quality system, IS, specific parts of the Aurecon methodology and so on. That will help us in identifying the most important things to fix
- Briefly describe your thing and why it’s dumb
- Your suggestion as to how to simplify it - it is only fair to expect you to suggest how to fix it.
