Chonburi people have been holding the Buffalo racing festival for more than 100 years, but the informal races have a longer history history than that. The buffalo races have traditionally taken place one day before the end of Buddhist Lent or Awk Phansa. On this occasion, farmers usually gathered at the temple to offer alms to monks and sell products from their farms. They also brought their buffaloes with them and to kill the time on slow days, they raced their buffaloes. From that time on, the races are now organized into an annual two-week festival in October which is worth millions of Bath for the economy in Chonburi.
From hobby to serious racing, the racer nowadays tran their buffaloes seriously for the festival and feel special food to ensure that they are in prime race condition. The racecourse is 100 meters long setting up in front of Chonburi's city hall.
