The discussion of biological effects of power fiquency
magnetic fields started in fhe late 1970’s. Their potential
impact on human health has been studied by a very large
number of research projects. Cellular studies were
conducted, some in vitro (in all cultures), and some in
vivo (in the living body) in animals. Epidemiologic studies
of cancer were initiated and reported. Their main purpose
was to examine the association between common exposure
to magnetic fields and childhood and adult leukemia,
lymph tuxnors, breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and
childhood brain or central nervous system tumors. They
included residential and octxpational studies. Reproductive
studies were also conducted, in vitro and in vivo in
animals. Biological interaction mechanisms involved were
studied. Studies related to nerve and muscle cells, cell
membranes, nervous and cardiovascular system were
reported. Studies of the pineal gland and the melatonin
levels affected by power .Gequency EMF e.sposure were
conducted by several groups.
