his paper discusses the findings of a study on the competencies of secondary school's Head of Departments (HODs) and implications for their continuous professional development. Based on the literature review, five competencies were identified; administration of subject department, curriculum development, supervision and mentoring of teachers, professional development and interpersonal relations. Questionnaires were used to collect data from HODs in 15 secondary schools in Kuching Division, Sarawak. The findings showed that, except for interpersonal relations in which most of the HODs studied perceived themselves to have a high competency level, the competency levels of the majority of HODs are medium in the other four competencies studied. The findings highlight the importance and need for continuous professional development of the HODs to enable them to face the challenges and changes brought about by advances in ICT, advancement in knowledge, changes in the curriculum, and to perform their role effectively and efficiently.
