The national emblem of the Philippines is a coat of arms bearing a motif of the Sun with eight rays in the center. The rays represent the eight provinces that were under martial law during the Philippines Revolution. The three stars refer to the three primary geographic regions of Luzon, Mindanao and Visayas. The blue field on the lower left side bears the image of the United States eagle, and the red field on the lower right has the image of a lion, the symbol of Spain. Both animals represent the Philippines’ colonial past.
