Abstract —
This paper discusses the ecological questions of operation of small-scale biomass fired boilers, focused on automated combustion of pellets. There is shown difference between mostly used on-off control and advanced continuous control with emphasis on controlling of release of gaseous emissions, mainly CO and hydrocarbons, and efficiency of the boiler. Results from measurement campaigns on experimental boiler with developed continuous control system show optimization of grate movement with impacts on CO emissions. There is also discussed the issue of gradual sensor malfunction and proposed solution by model-based extension of control system functionality.
