The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn picks up where The Adventures of Tom Sawyer left off, explaining that Tom and Huck had become rich after finding the money that the robbers had left in the cave. Huck had been taken in by the Widow Douglas, who promised to “sivilize” him. Huck, bored by this civilized life, initially tried to run away but later returned at Tom’s insistence. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn begins here, after Huck returns to the Widow’s home and has spent some time being educated by the Widow and her sister Miss Watson. At the end of the chapter, he hears a “me-yow!” coming from outside, responds in the same manner, and sneaks out the window to find Tom waiting for him.
