In the presence of oxygen, the toxic
ammonia present in the wastewater would undergo spontaneous
bacterial oxidation converting it subsequently into nitrite and nitrate.
This explains the global problem of aquaculture effluent
which turns ponds and lakes gradually into marshes. Since
ammonia and phosphorus are ecologically significant in MA productivity,
their proper removal from release to the aquatic water
bodies is quintessential to prevent the occurrence of
eutrophication.
