the measurement of the leakage of electrolytes from bulks of seeds into soak water is one of the quickest and most convenient laboratory tests of physiological seed quality. Even so, the so-called electrical conductivity (EC) test has only been validated as a routine test by ISTA to indicate relative field emergence in three grain legumes: vining peas, soybeans and Phaseolus beans (ISTA, 2013). The EC test is in the process of being validated for other grain legumes (chickpeas, cowpeas) by the provision of evidence that EC relate to emergence in seed lots having high, acceptable levels of germination and is repeatable within laboratories and reproducible between laboratories. Such a test would be useful for salad radish in Turkey, where poor stand establishment can be a problem for seed lots with commercially acceptable levels of normal seedling (above 75%) in the standard germination test.
