PHA can be greatly produced from actual VFA-containing sludge fermentation liquid (SFL). The highest PHA content was obtained with 59.47% DCW from SFL without any pretreatments (ammonia removal or substrate dilution) at pilot-scale. Bacterial domestication may eliminate the adverse impact of non-VFAs and PHA accumulation was reinforced by optimizing the community structure and improving the substrate selective ability of the bacterial consortium. The ceramic membrane system could obtain high quality SFL which can be continuously submitted to obtain high quality PHA products. This integrated technology at pilotscale was feasible to reduce excess sludge disposal and produce PHA with low cost.
