The synergistic effects of biodegradation and ZVI corrosion reaction
determined the whole enhancement of COD removal and
methane formation in the combined system. And the synergistic
effects were greatly affected by ZVI dosage. It was proposed that
an appropriate ZVI dosage should depend on the characteristics of
microorganism and contaminants in specific system, which could
make the system achieve a favorable performance while minimize
the inhibitory impact induced by the solid iron species. In this
experiment, performance of the system at the rZVI/VSS of 5.26 was
slightly poorer than that observed at the former rZVI/VSS, suggesting
that the ZVI dosage of 50 g/L was too high to facilitate microbial
activity for this anaerobic system. Based on the processing requirements
and economic costs, it was advised to choose the optimum
