A number of sports require players to perform overhead throws from various outfield positions. This technique is the most effective throwing action and is frequently used by cricketers and baseball players. The key components of a good overhead throw are speed and accuracy. But there is one sport which requires players to perform multiple overhead throws during a game, and it is not even conducted on land! In water polo, the overhead throw differs markedly from the on-land version, especially so when the player is shooting for goal. At release of the ball, the arm is almost fully extended and the hand flexed, thereby providing the ball with a slight backspin. Speed and angle of release are of paramount importance to the successful player. An increased throwing velocity and momentum reduces the time in which a goalkeeper may detect the path of a ball and deflect it. Also, at sufficiently high velocities, the ball can be made to bounce off the water. If this occurs, the ball may be projected to a point in front of the goal and still result in a goal. So, in on attempt to improve throwing velocity, many water polo players undertake strength training.
