Robyn Cruz (USA) and Hedda Lausberg (Germany) presented results of two studies with
the Movement Psychodiagnostic Inventory (MPI; Davis, 1991). The MPI uses descriptive language from dance and dance thrapy research and was used as the measure of motor dysfunction in both studies. Results suggest that different patterns of MPI variables successfully distinguished between patients with DSM diagnoses of schizophrenia spectrum and personality disorders, and nonverbal MPI scores correctly classified more than 85% of patients with narcissistic and borderline personality disorder. The authors conclude that diagnostic distinctions on the basis of video analysis of motor behavior alone offer a significant contribution to psychiatry in terms of time savings, specificity, and reliability of diagnosis.
