At the time of felling, the average moisture content of frames
with Norway spruce, beech, oak and sycamore maple was 581,
466, 457 and 425 g kg1 total weight, respectively. Based on
a pairwise comparison (Bonferoni), the average moisture
content of frames with Norway spruce was significantly
higher than of any of the deciduous species (P < 0.05). Further,
the average moisture content for frames with sycamore maple
was significantly smaller than for frames with beech (P < 0.05).
The time of felling seemed to have little influence on the
average moisture content, although firewood felled in March
had a significantly lower moisture content compared to any
other month (P < 0.05). The latter finding may be due to an
increase in transpiration when the temperature increases
combined with limited water supply as the soil water is
frozen
