Ratchaburi is a very old city since ancient era. It was a town of the Suwannaphum Kingdom which was very prosperous. During the Ayutthaya period the town was sacked twice, in 1765 and 1767, by invading Burmese armies en route to besiege the capital city of Ayutthaya.
From historical source , inscription of King Ramkamhang , Ratchburi was a frontier town throughout Ayutthaya kingdom. After the community was moved from Koo Bua on the west side of the Mae Klong river. Wat Maha That became the center from the end of Tavaravadee Period right through Sukhothai , Ayutthaya and Ratanakosin Periods respectively. Ratchaburi is one of the cities which has remained in the same place for a long time in the Thai kingdom.In the reign of King Rama III , the king had graciously moved the city to the east side of the river as it was seen that the old site was not suitable for military strategies
